How do I verify an incomplete citation for a journal article?

PubMed's Citation Sensor offers an easy way to locate a citation even when you lack complete bibliographic information (e.g. author, title, year). To locate your specific citation, enter any or all of the following bibliographic elements: journal title, date, volume, issue, page, author into PubMed's search box. PubMed will look for matching citations.

PubMed also offers a Single Citation Matcher tool which uses a Web form to enter bibliographic information and search for matching citation(s).

Step by Step: 
  1. Visit PubMed.
  2. Enter as much bibliographic information as you have for the citation into the search box. For example, enter the journal name, volume number, and author’s name. 


     
  3. PubMed will return a list of citations matching the criteria you entered.


     
  4. You can also use the PubMed Single Citation Matcher tool.  Use the Single Citation Matcher tool link at the bottom of the PubMed home page.

  5. Enter as much bibliographic information as you have for the citation into the form, then click Go .

  6. Single Citation Matcher will return a list of citations matching the criteria you entered.
